1. Hunter Skinner - London Knights
I think that there was a lot to like about Skinner in his first OHL season. It certainly wasn't perfect, but I think he showed more than many were expecting. I, for one, was certainly impressed with his level of skill with the puck as I expected him to be more of a straight line kind of defender. However, there were times this year where he showed creativity in creating space for himself in transition or while on the point, making defenders miss or utilizing fakes to step around them. The big point shot came as advertised too. He can really fire the puck, even if the six goals may not indicate that. Additionally, he shows well as a physical player at times. A 6'3 right shot defender, who can move reasonably well and can play both ends could be a real asset if developed properly. And in London, he should definitely develop properly. There are certainly some areas that need to be cleaned up. Indecisiveness with the puck was something I noticed on a few occasions, where turnovers became an issue, especially in the offensive zone. He needs to keep those feet moving and keep that head up to make those decisions quicker. He also needs to be more active on the point if he wants to get those opportunities to use his shot. He can get a little stagnant back there. As a defensive player, I think indecisive is a word that fits him again. Be it routes to dump ins, defensive zone reads, exit passes; his defensive game is raw. But again, there's a framework here that could allow him to turn into a real solid prospect. Next year Skinner should figure prominently in London and has a chance to be the team's top defender. This could mean a serious jump in production. He's one of the players I am most excited to see progression from next year and I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that he could be a 15 goal, 35 assist player if he is able to work on some of those issues.
