The 2021 NHL Entry Draft commenced today and 32 OHL players had
their names called by NHL clubs. All things considered, this total is actually higher than I anticipated. Not because of the quality available from Ontario, but because the league did not play. It has been right in line with the 30 or so taken the last few years.
Below you can find the results for OHL players, as well as my draft ranking before the draft (for comparison's sake).
Some general thoughts on how the draft played out:
- Highest
players to go unselected from my rankings included Simon Motew, Ranvir Gill Shane, Braeden Kressler, Stuart Rolofs, Avery Hayes, Nick DeGrazia, and JR Avon. If I am being perfectly honest, none are completely shocking...again given the circumstances.
- Certainly was not surprising to see Mason McTavish go ahead of Brandt Clarke. As I mentioned, I even contemplated placing him ahead of Clarke. Big fan of both of these young men.
- While it did not shock me at all to see Wyatt Johnston go ahead of Francesco Pinelli, it did to see Stillman and, especially Mailloux, also be selected ahead of him.
- Honestly not surprised to see guys like Ty Voit, Connor Lockhart, Francesco Arcuri, and Ryan Mast fall so far. But I do think that they will prove to be excellent selections and prove that if the OHL had played, they would have been selected much earlier.
